Organic clothing is clothing made from materials raised in or grown in compliance with organic agricultural standards.
Organic textiles are grown in controlled settings with no pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. Only natural fertilizers are used and the soil and water are monitored. If a fiber is certified organic its growing conditions have been monitored and certified by an agency from one of the several organic trade associations worldwide. A fabric can be called organic as long as 95% of the fabric contains the organic fabric
The aim of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
GOTS is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.
